"Rum Running on Lake Erie"

Wed., Sept. 25, 7 p.m.

Grandview Lodge Auditorium

657 Lock Street West, Dunnville, ON

During the days of prohibition, Lake Erie fishermen sometimes filled their boats with a catch that wasn't the usual blue pickerel or whitefish. They called it "Midnight Herring", and you could sometimes hear it clinking in the hold. Between 1920 and 1933, untold thousands of gallons of bootleg whiskey crossed the lake in boats and ferries. Colourful characters like Mike Semple, "Eddie The Kid", and “Bugeye Smith" plied their trade from Dover and Dunnville to Erie and Cleveland, and sometimes paying the ultimate price for their crime.

In the spring of 2017, one of Canada's greatest modern-day explorers, Adam Shoalts, traversed Canada's arctic--because it was deemed impossible. Between his starting point in Eagle Plains, Yukon Territory, to his destination in Baker Lake, Nunavut, lay a maze of obstacles, any of which would be daunting to even the most adventurous explorer. Together, they might be suidical. But with his determination and his love of nature, Shoalts set alone to accomplish the impossible.  In this program, Shoalts recounts his journey.
